For February's meeting we should really tighten up the two big trips. OSH and NYC.... Not to mention Sun N Fun. I know some are planning on going to that. I think we should get a poll on that one too... So much to do! FREE FPA License Plate Frames for members. Purchase an additional one for a small stipend. Let's talk about our possible start of AOPA/EAA Airport Open House. The following is from their website. We should discuss this further. "INTERNATIONAL Ã?Â" L E A RN TO F LY D AY Ã?Â" Announced during EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2009, International Learn to Fly Day is a cooperative effort by pilots, companies, governments, and organizations around the world to raise interest in flying and encourage current pilots to get others involved in aviation. The inaugural event is planned for May 15, 2010, with the intention of making it an annual event. Specific events to punctuate International Learn to Fly Day are in the planning stage. More details will be announced after the first of the year." Also, we need to figure out Oshkosh 2010. Only about 6 month and about 15 days from our meet night. We doing an Oshkosh Raffle? Let's discuss that as well. I'm sure we'll add more to the list. As always, Fly Often and Fly Safe. See you all soon. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- As always, food at 6:00 and meeting at 7:00. Where else can you have this much excitement for $25 bucks a year? Fly Often and Fly Safe, Charley

OK, let's join the NE Pilots group on this one. They'll be there as well as lots of others and events. For those that have never landed on the ice, it's worth doing and adding to your logbook. Besides, you might "have" to someday!!! Anyhow, this will be a good day to fly into there and join our local friends. "We have Paul LaRochelle, an Alton Bay non-pilot local, to thank for reviving the Alton Bay iceport. The former manager gave up on maintaining the iceport, but the locals discovered that they missed their winged friends, so Paul, a contractor that lives right along the shoreline, picked up the ball and now plows the runway and taxiway for us (uncompensated). Can you believe that it can take 8 hours to plow 16 inches of snow to form a 2400 ft x 80 ft runway with taxiiway?", " Note: when you see Popsicle the Penguin walking around at the festival, be sure to shake his flipper. Popsicle is the reason why we can all land there. Despite being a flightless bird, he is our very own Paul LaRochelle, the airport manager and chief plow operator! " from NEPilots Group. http://www.airnav.com/airport/B18 As always, the NEPilots group is always flying out somewhere. There is no reason to have a plane on the ground not flying these days. They are also a Meetup group. Thanks to Sam Mirsky for reminding me about this place. In 2009 it was closed due to good wx??? A reverse metar I guess. AOPA's recent article: http://www.aopa.org/members/files/pilot/2010/january/feature_icerunway.html?WT.mc_id=ebrief%20 Alton Bay's flyer for the event: http://files.meetup.com/392518/alton%20bay.pdf The hotline to call is 603-875-3498 Toby, Gregg, Jim, Jack Pinder, Ed Murphy, Myself and a bunch of others have many landings here. The trick is to come in slow, low, and STRAIGHT. You don't want to use your brakes if possible. Snow banks are on the sides. There are lots of snow mobiles and ice fishing going on. Most of the time when departing, we might zoom over the lake at 100 feet or so, but be careful there, others are out there also! Best is to depart and go.. There are all kinds of planes there. Some on ski's, some as big as saratoga's. ( Course, high wings have it easier )... Here's a landing I did there that Dave took one time. Good thing I didn't know it! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pTEDX1PMdBA See ya V Day, Charley

Boston’s own troubadour Ellis Paul has been one of the leading voices in the singer/songwriter genre that emerged from the Boston folk scene, creating a movement that revitalized the national acoustic circuit with an urban, literate, folk pop style in the 1990s. Since then, Paul hasn’t slowed down one bit, with 14 albums to his credit and numerous Boston Music Awards. His music has appeared in movies and on television, bridging the gap between the modern folk sound and the populist traditions of Woody Guthrie and Pete Seeger. With his soaring vocals and heartfelt storytelling, Paul is part poet and part singer, an impressive talent whose keen insight into life’s ways and means might just make you sit up a little taller and listen a little more intently.

With their roots based in bluegrass, Celtic, and jazz music, the good ol’ fashioned family band Cherryholmes has stormed to the top of the music world since winning the 2005 IBMA (International Bluegrass Music Association) Award for Entertainer of the Year. Sure, they’re kind of kitschy but nearly no one in the traditional bluegrass circuit can mimic their downright flying fingers and ripping musicianship. Parents Sandy and Jere Cherryholmes (on mandolin and upright base, respectively) are the foundation of the six-member band, with children Cia, Skip, BJ and Molly at the forefront of the group’s hard-driving instrumental virtuosity and explosive vocal harmonies. With stylistic choreography, their own lighting design and various styles of original songs written by members of the band, Cherryholmes is a group unlike any other, sure to get your feet tapping, put a smile on your face and maybe even move you to do some dancing in the aisles.

Many of us have heard the expression “found art” to describe objects not usually considered art, but still can be found to be aesthetic, intriguing and beautiful. Now think of what something like “found music” might sound like. Maybe it’s car horns and the sounds of a coffee shop, or City Hall and an elementary classroom. Maybe it’s that mixed with orchestration, video, percussion and symphonics. What it most definitely is, is the genius of So Percussion hitting things – drums, glockenspiels, coffee cups, metal pipes, whatever is handy. Since 1999, when they met at the Yale School of Music, this foursome has merged percussion with emotions, resulting in music called “astonishing and entrancing” by Billboard Magazine, and “brilliant” by the New York Times. Now, here at CenterStage, after gathering the sounds and sights of Fitchburg and its people on film and audio during the last year, So Percussion will present its one of a kind new work Imaginary City, a compilation of sounds and sights of Fitchburg and other multiple sponsoring cities from around the country. Join So Percussion for this amazing Fitchburg performance.

LEARN TO FLY DAY, MAY 15 I'm sure we'll do something... Let's decide soon. Maybe an Open House day? During AirVenture 2009 EAA and numerous other aviation organizations declared May 15, 2010, as International Learn to Fly Day. To help support this effort, EAA is encouraging chapters to hold some activity on that day that will introduce the general public to the idea of learning to fly. Learn to Fly Day events do not need to be complicated or extensive. They can be as simple as taking someone for an introductory flight and then introducing them to a flight instructor. Plans might include an airport open house, a fly-in breakfast, or even a mall show. Use your imaginations and keep us posted as to what you plan to do so that we can share your ideas with other Chapters. We've also established a special e-mail address for Learn to Fly day suggestions, plans or questions. We will also be posting ideas and progress on the development of International Learn to Fly Day on EAA Web pages. The following are some ideas to get you started. Remember, these are just suggestions, so use your imaginations: Airport Open House Chapter Hangar Open House Intro flight Presentations to other organizations Program swaps with other organizations (example model airplane club) Mall shows Cooperative program with flight school

Everyone should go to this one, and take the kiddies... 110m's to the beach! "No, we didn't dump it here!" More details will be coming forthwith... We need a plan on this soon. Let's go enjoy this rare event and support Mike Goulian. The fifth race of the 2010 Red Bull Air Race World Championship season will be held, in partnership with NYC & Company, Jersey City, NJ and Liberty State Park, over the Hudson River on June 19 and 20. This year marks the sixth year of the Red Bull Air Race World Championship which will also land in nine cities including Abu Dhabi, UAE; Perth, Australia, and Lisbon, Portugal. Ã?Â"New York City is known for its ability to draw some of the worldÃ?Â's greatest, large-scale events each year, and weÃ?Â're always happy to welcome new and exciting sporting events that amplify its reputation as one of the most electrifying cities in the world,Ã?Â" said NYC & Company CEO George Fertitta. Ã?Â"The Red Bull Air Race World Championship will, without a doubt, bring a new element of adventure to this city, and add to the incredible roster of events taking place here in 2010.Ã?Â" In 2009, the Red Bull Air Race was broadcast in over 180 countries reaching over 300 million viewers. The two-day spectator experience, coupled with the global television broadcast, will showcase New York as a premier sporting destination. The race in New York and Jersey City also represents an exciting opportunity to stimulate the local economy. Ã?Â"Jersey City is fast becoming a premier destination to host major events, such as the All Points West concerts and the 2009 Barclays golf tournament,Ã?Â" said Mayor Jerramiah T. Healy. Ã?Â"The Red Bull Air Race is a high-caliber event that provides international exposure and will bring millions of tourism dollars into our city. We are aggressively marketing Jersey City as a global brand and we are thrilled to have the worldÃ?Â's most talented pilots compete above our Hudson River waterfront.Ã?Â" The Red Bull Air Race is different from all other motorsports in that it takes its race track with it wherever it goes around the world bringing the action to the spectator. To do this, it takes a logistics operation unparalleled in the sports business to transport 380 tons of infrastructure and race equipment including 15 light-weight, 24-foot wingspan race planes and the sport's own traveling air traffic control tower. Ã?Â"Staging a Red Bull Air Race in New York City and Jersey City marks an important milestone in the history of the global motorsports championship and we feel privileged to be given this opportunity,Ã?Â" said Bernd Loidl, CEO of the Red Bull Air Race. Ã?Â"We look forward to our partnership with both cities and providing spectators with an incredible experience as well as enabling millions of television viewers around the globe to watch the best race pilots compete against the spectacular skyline of some of the worldÃ?Â's great cities.Ã?Â" Over the past five years, the Red Bull Air Race has held races in major metropolitans such as London, Rio de Janeiro, Barcelona, and in the U.S. in San Diego, Detroit, San Francisco, and Monument Valley, Utah. Of the fifteen race pilots from around the world, two are Americans, Kirby Chambliss from Arizona and Michael Goulian from Massachusetts. Each pilot operates a year-round race team including a technician and team coordinator. The end goal for each race team is to accumulate as many points throughout the season in a quest to achieve the prestigious honor of 2010 Red Bull Air Race World Champion. http://www.redbullairrace.com/cs/Satellite/en_air/Article/New-York-City-to-host-Red-Bull-Air-Race-in-2010-021242809131161?p=1238611393596
Want to come spend a few days with over 10,000 airplanes and 800,000 of the best people on earth? Come with us to Airventure this year!!! Even if you have just "dreamed" of going, please sign up and fill out the survey questions. It might be easier to go than you think. I would like to see what people would like to do and see if we can get a group or a few groups to go. One option would be to get a few of us to drive out in an RV for the week. It would be a cheap way to spend the week as well as maybe a place to stay midweek for people who will just fly themselves in for a night or two. Arrangements could be made to bring out supplies as well. For instance, if you don't have room in your plane for a lounge chair or suit case. What is Airventure? Here is an excert from http://airventure.org/ If you want to enjoy a typical day at the Convention, get your walking shoes on and dress casual. The gates open at 7 a.m., but get there early to see as much as you can each day. Longtime attendees will tell you that you need more than one day to really see it all. As you arrive, the number of people, size of the site and the rows and rows of magnificent aircraft are simply overwhelming. If you were to walk past ... not down ... each row of airplanes, you would cover 5.2 miles! Typically about 2,500 show aircraft participate at EAA AirVenture Oshkosh, including homebuilts, antiques, classics, warbirds, ultralights and rotorcraft. Be sure you get a map, because even if you've been here before, the new site improvements in 2009 bring a new look to one of the world's great aviation events. You don't want to waste a minute while you're here. The first thing to look at is airplanes on the flight line. As an EAA member, you can inspect firsthand the craftsmanship and design advancements that come from the hands and minds of EAA members. If you're interested in a particular airplane chances are you'll find it in Oshkosh. As you walk along the flight line you'll see many of the newsmakers and personalities who make the world of aviation so exciting. Traveling across AeroShell Square, AirVenture's main display ramp, you might see anything from the Spirit of St. Louis to a Stealth fighter. Don't miss KidVenture! Since landing at Wittman Regional Airport, KidVenture has attracted thousands of participants young and old alike with its hands-on, educational-and fun-aviation-based demonstrations and presentations. After all, kids get to build their own gliders and rockets, fly simulators, see aviation legends tell their stories, ride in a tethered hot-air balloon, and so much more.

Located just 10 miles from New Hampshire and 50 miles from Boston, the city enjoys excellent access via highway or public transportation to all points.
The paper industry was dominated the history but that has given way to a healthier economic diversification that now includes tool and die makers - machine manufacturers – pharmaceuticals - plastic molders and textile producers.
